State to crack down on massage parlors

Delaware officials want to crack down on massage parlors, some of which they say are havens for prostitution and human trafficking.

With the backing of Attorney General Matt Denn, a bi-partisan group of 16 legislators has proposed a new law that would tighten regulations on massage businesses. The goal is to empower law enforcement to pursue the owners of illegal operations instead of their masseuses, who often are being forced into prostitution.

Alaska flight attendant praised for reportedly saving human trafficking victim

A flight attendant has been hailed a hero after reportedly saving a teenage girl from a sex trafficker while working on a flight nearly 6 years ago.

Shelia Fedrick of Alaska Airlines noticed a girl with greasy blonde hair, believed to be about 14 or 15, sitting next to a well dressed older man on an Alaska flight from Seattle to San Francisco in 2011.

Fedrick said the difference in age and appearance between the traveling companions seemed suspicious to her at the time.

But the flight attendant was especially struck by the demeanour of the girl who looked like “she had been through pure hell."

The City of Philadelphia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services and the Region 3 Anti-Human Trafficking Federal Interagency Taskforce invite you to a screening of the film: Playground: The Child Sex Trade in America Panel Discussion to Follow Tuesday, January 24, 2017 | 9:00 a.m. to 11:30am Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. 801 Market Street, 11th Floor, Room 1154A, Philadelphia, PA Register at https://goo.gl/7z4Efb ! Human trafficking is a crime which involves the forcing or coercing of a person into performing a commercial sex act or forced labor. In honor of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, the Region III Anti-Human Trafficking Taskforce is partnering with the City of Philadelphia to sponsor a viewing of the documentary film Playground. This movie , by filmmaker Libby Spears and produced by George Clooney, Stephen Soderbergh, and Grant Heslov, offers a glimpse into the reality of sexual slavery in the United States. The film takes you through the stories of young girls who could very well be your neighbor, you friend, your daughter or your sister. The viewing will be followed by a panel discussion featuring social service providers and Federal Government staff directly engaged in work to stop the epidemic of trafficking individuals across the country. This educational event is open to all interested parties including healthcare and social services professionals, faith-based organizations, academia and students.
